Day 9

Zechariah 8:20-23

Thus says the Lord of hosts: Peoples shall yet come, the inhabitants of many cities; the inhabitants
of one city shall go to another, saying, 'Come, let us go to entreat the favour of the Lord, and to
seek the Lord of hosts; I myself am going.' Many peoples and strong nations shall come to seek
the Lord of hosts in Jerusalem, and to entreat the favour of the Lord. Thus says the Lord of hosts:
In those days ten men from nations of every language shall take hold of a Jew, grasping his garment and saying, 'Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.'

Zechariah looks forward to a time when Yahweh, God of the Israelites and God of the Angel Armies (see The Message) will be known to all nations.  In the time of Zechariah and in the time of Jesus there were a preponderance of idols, gods for all aspects of life.  They were an attempt by humankind to reach up to God.

Zechariah promises us something and indeed someone better.  He promises us "God with us."

This is what the wise men of Matthew 2 sought.  People of all nations can know the presence of
God with us in our daily lives through the life of Jesus, who was and is "God with us" and who did
not leave us alone but gave us his Spirit to live within us.

Prayer

Lord God, we thank you that you are not a distant God, but God with us.  May we know you
presence with us every moment of every day.  May we be a blessing to all nations as we proclaim
Jesus as our saviour and Lord.  Amen.
